Description

This is my favorite hike in the park – incredible views and I doubt we will see anyone else all day.

  • Meet up 8:00 and drive to Clearwater
  • Meet the leader at the Wells Gray Info Center at 9:30 for driving instructions
  • Drive up Clearwater Valley Road to Trophy Mountain Turnoff
  • At the junction stay right and travel along the Spahats FSR to the unsigned trailhead
  • We should be on the trail shortly after 10:00

From the trailhead, we travel up a steep switch-backed trail up to the meadows and past Trophy Chalet.  We then ascend up a steep trail to the first ridge.  We then drop down and then up to the second ridge.  Then down again past a beautiful alpine tarn and up the final steep talus slope to the third ridge.  Here sheer cliffs and incredible views await.  The highlight is the view of the 3 tiered lakes on the north east side of Trophy main summit.  We will have lunch on the cliffs.

The hike up to the Trophy Chalet is steep, but we will take our time.  The climb up to the third ridge involves climbing a stable talus slope (but not a real scramble), but again we will take our time.

Even on the hottest days it can be windy and cool on the ridges, so bring an extra layer.

If weather is unfavorable, the event will be rescheduled.
