Description

A longer hike with a good climb to the Red Plateau Escarpment

  • Brock Dog park meetup by 10:30 (a later start than usual so bring lots of water)
  • a later start (I have an appointment earlier that day)
  • drive to the Dewdrop Range and along the upper road (high clearance)
  • hike up the Dead Coyote Trail to the red Plateau Escarpment route/Dewdrop Traverse Trail); traverse west, then down the Three Amigos Trail
  • elevation gain = 2000 vertical feet
  • distance – up to 13  km
  • article on the routeThree Amigos Route
  • this is a longer, more difficult route that will test endurance so fitness and experience is an issue; contact the hike leader if you are unsure; we will contact you if we are unsure
  • a longer downhill, a test for the knees and ankles, esp. if conditions are dry (loose material)
  • hydration will be important
  • wildflowers will be out
  • good boots required and trekking poles recommended
  • a scenic route
  • this is remote terrain so we will stay together for safety (stragglers will be a difficult scenario)
  • the turns and connections are unsigned and not obvious so hikers are asked to stay with the leader who knows the route
  • An etiquette reminder – Conversations on the trail should be kept at a muted conversational level/volume so that other members of the group do not have to hear the dialogue.   A number of our members also like to listen for the sounds of nature while out hiking on the trails.
