November 2023 Newsletter
Board Updates
- Board Meeting was held on October 23, 2023. Minutes are posted on the website under Club Info/Meeting Minutes page.
- Recommended Car Pooling Costs –Â Guidelines & Expectations have been revised for local in town trips with the following:Â On local day hike trips, we suggest that each passenger pay the driver $5 for every 30 minutes of driving time per trip. Â For instance, a 1 hour drive in total (30 minutes each way) would be $10 per passenger; 2 hours would be $20, and 3 hours would be $30.
- Hike Leader Recognition – The board decided to reimplement the monthly hike leader appreciation draws.  Hike leaders who posted an event in a given month are entered into the draw to win a $50 gift card..
- The Fall Potluck, Social & Hike Leader Recognition will be held at the Barnhartvale Hall on Saturday, November 25th. The get together has always been very popular amongst the members and is a great way to mingle and get to know your fellow hikers & to say thanks to our wonderful hike leaders!
- Event Cancellations – The club understands that from time to time an event booking needs to be cancelled and we ask that it be done as early as possible and no later than 1 hour before the meet-up time. The club asks that members don’t get into the habit of routinely signing up and cancelling events as it takes away the opportunity for others to join the event.

Events Program
- The last 2 months kicked off with a bang with Sheila leading a grind up Yak peak Sept 1st that had us grumbling until we met a young guy at the peak that hiked up in his bare feet.
- The local wildfires were slowly winding down allowing more outdoor activities and the weather in September and October was good making up for the smoky weeks before. Our sympathies go out to all the people and nature that were affected.
- In the last 10 months we averaged 20 events per month.
- We had 17 events posted in both September & October that were well attended. Â We hiked some of our favourites (Embelton, Lundbom, Grassland Community Trail, McQueen, Barnes Lake, Battle Bluff, Buse Hill, Wheeler, Sunrise, Deep Lake, Abbey Road, Six Mile, Brussels Hills, Stake Lake, Paul Lake, Red Plateau, Mt Rose Swanson, Roche Lake, Watching Creek Bluff & Caves & Strawberry Hills, etc)
- You can see the events that were posted by going to Past Events and 2023 Events Grouped by Month
- We are still looking for eager volunteers to step up and become leaders and co-leaders
- Leaders plan, organize & post events and co-leaders help the leader execute a fun & safe event.
- If you are interested please check out the Hike Leader Program & Resources information and/or contact Monika Taki the KHC Hike Leader Liaison for more information.
