KHC December 2022 Newsletter
Update: With gratitude, we say farewell to Nicole Yanko who has stepped down as KHC vice president. We wish her the best with her new and exciting adventures!
Join us in welcoming Katherine Roberts to the KHC vice president position. Katherine was one of the founders of the club and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and positive energy.
Volunteer Recognition: Thank you to all our hike leaders! The club appreciates every hike and event that you are able to contribute. We are grateful for all the time and effort you put in whether it be one hike or 365 hikes! The foundation of the club is built and nurtured by its volunteers. It’s a pleasure and privilege to work, hike, and enjoy the outdoors with all of you.
Thank you to Katherine Roberts who recently hosted KHCs first potluck of the year! Be sure to be on the lookout for more in the future. Katherine is a founding member of the club. She was instrumental in the formation of the club in 2001. She advertised the club through the newspaper, posters around town, then Facebook (2007). By then the club had grown to 100 members! Over the years Katherine has led hikes, backpacks, seminars, and social potlucks.Â
Thank you to Gerry Hoye for his years of leading hikes. Gerry is a caring, compassionate leader and there was always an adventure and laughter to be had on his hikes. Come out and celebrate Gerry at his farewell dinner Sunday, November 27th. Sign-up is on the club website. Thank you to Margo, Deanna, and others who are organizing this special event. Gerry and his wife are moving to Saskatchewan and they will be immensely missed!
Thank you to Doug Smith for his countless hours as the club’s webmaster. Doug joined the board in 2011. He was the first person to step into the role of President of the club. Doug created a new website for the club and helped formalize it as a society. He has been instrumental in the club’s success and served as president for many years. He leads countless events and shares his knowledge of trails and routes extensively.  His skill and dedication as the webmaster can not be understated and are greatly appreciated.  However, Doug has decided to pass the duties of webmaster on to new hands.Â
Thank you to Frith Powell and Monika Taki. Frith has joined the board as the club’s IT Director. Monika is continuing in the role of volunteering as technical support for the club’s website. Their skills and time are greatly appreciated and valued. The club is currently exploring options for the club website.Â
Thank you to Lisa Boutry for her countless hours as the club’s secretary. We appreciate and are grateful for her organizational skills, typing up agendas and minutes, and your creative ideas and contributions. Members of the club have also loved her adventurous themed hikes, such as the Eggmazing Race. She was also the force behind creating the recent club logo and shirts.  Â
Thank you to Gerry MacDougall who is stepping in as the club’s secretary. Gerry is a valuable member of the club. He has years of experience with organizing and starting/running clubs/societies as well as extensive knowledge of the outdoors.
Thank you to Doug Morris who has joined the board as our KHC social director. Doug will be organizing special theme-based events and activities. If you have any ideas for special events please feel free to reach out to Doug. He would love to collaborate and support members with initiatives that will foster engagement, fun, and a supportive community.
Hike Leaders and anyone interested in becoming a hike leader: Sheila Powell our hike leader liaison who manages the hike leader recognition program, updating and notifying hike leaders of changes or hiking club news, and facilitating hike leader training will be hosting a hike leader information/feedback event with the support of Monika Taki. This is an opportunity for current hike leaders or members interested in knowing more about what is involved with being a hike leader and a chance to collaborate. Â
A big welcome to new hike leaders Pam and Tim Paradis and Kevin and Erika Herndier. They have all participated in numerous KHC events and enjoy taking in the outdoors, through hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and cycling. We look forward to the adventures they will be leading. Â
Adopt a Trail Maintenance: Sasha Lees and Sheila Powell will be hosting an event for trail maintenance and clean-up closer to spring. The club is enrolled in the city’s adopt a trail program. More information to come.
KHC Bird Houses: Bruce Bunko has stepped away from the Bluebird boxes if anyone is interested in taking this on in the spring contact Deanna Rice on the board. Bruce dedicated his time to cleaning and monitoring the birdhouses in the Kamloops Grasslands. Â
Tech News: Thank you for your patience as the club sorts out the technical difficulties with the club’s email contact system. The system has not been reliable or dependable. Our IT techs are working on it and we will update you as soon as possible.
Next KHC Board Meeting: The next board meeting will be on January 7th. If you have an initiative you would like to put forward and have the club support you in taking on, please feel free to contact any member of the board. You may also get in touch by emailing Paulettetreks@gmail.com
