Website Changes
I revised the way the website is displayed to be in synch with the way the Club is going, particularly with Covid, forest fires, and the upsurge in interest in hiking.
Uncertainty
With first the Covid outbreak and now forest fires, it is hard for hike leaders to plan, schedule and count on proposed dates, times, and locations for hiking, backpacking, or other activities. Although we can get a reasonable weather forecast about 6 days out, with smoke, we can only plan 48 – 60 hours in advance. Putting events on the main list will inevitably mean many cancellations and disappointment. Any hiker leader can choose to post an event well in advance and hope for favorable conditions, but we have little appetite for that strategy so we have made some adjustments.
Hike leaders can create a draft event with some ideas, but leave the event listing incomplete until the conditions are better understood. This is done by choosing Draft Events (only) as the event category (in edit mode, on the right side, in the Events Category widget). Once published the event will only appear in the widget on the right (Draft Events). At a later date, if the date, time, and location is decided, the category can be changed to Hike or another category, then it will appear in the Upcoming Events widget on the right.
Events can appear on both sides if more than one event category is chosen. Draft Events in the right widget have less detail than those in Upcoming Events.
Public Interest
With a resurgence in interest in hiking, we are getting a fair amount of interest in KHC, but it is often not understood that it is a club of members, with events only for members, and that the Club is closed to new memberships. All of the information is on the website, but it takes some work to find, so we have revised the Landing Page of the website to be an overview of KHC.
Newsletters
Newsletters are mostly just once a month and with less activity, there is also less to talk about, so new newsletters will still be featured on the website, but bumped down below the Landing Page. Newsletters become old news quickly so they are shown in truncated format, with a link to see the whole post.
Backpacks and Camps
Most backpacks and camps fill up quickly then are “old news” so they are mostly integrated into the Upcoming Events list, but a separate widget listing can also been seen on the right side with less detail in the widget.
Functionally the website is still the same, but items were moved around and re-prioritized. If you have questions, contact us.

I think I may have fixed a long-running problem of the website logging us out all the time. Let me know if it is still a problem (after you have cleared your browser’s cache and logged back in again).
