Unpredictable Hiking Conditions
Conditions are tricky for hiking and snowshoeing right now.
- The valley bottom will have mostly good hiking, except right after a rain.
- The lower hills may be okay, but a trail that is sloped and/or has sand content will dry out faster and have less mud. Anywhere where snow is melting or recently melted will be muddy. Any trail that is flat and below a snow slope will be muddy from the runoff and seep.
- Upper hills that retain snow will be a bit slushy and wet.
- Upper trails that have lots of snow will see the trails packed down with wet snow conditions for snowshoers. If it freezes overnight, ice will form where the melt has not dispersed.
- Hike leaders may need to adjust their routes.
- Members should carry traction devices.
- If mud is encountered, a change of shoes may be advised, especially if carpooling.
