Trail Reports – Dec. 3, 2020
In shoulder season we can still hike on dirt and on the snow:
The Best
- The best hiking right now is either in the valley bottom (Rivers Trail West, Mission Flats West, McArthur Island) or the lower south-facing slopes (Moonscape, Mara Trail, Dewdrop Range) where the snow has melted, or higher in the hills (on the snow hikes) where there has been less of the melt-freeze cycles.
- In addition, any double tracks in the higher elevations make good on-the-snow hiking routes.
- As of Dec. 4, XC trails at Stake Lake are open to members and the public can ski the trails or snowshoe the area on December 7th. Snowshoeing is marginal in this area though at this time,
The Worst
- Trails that have been stomped down and then frozen will be icy. This is most noticeable in Kenna Cartwright Park and Peterson Creek Park.
- Construction for the Trans Mountain Pipeline has created a bit of a mess in Lower Batchelor Hills, the west side of Kenna Cartwright Park, and the west end of Mission Flats Park.
More
- The only good snowshoeing right now is at Sun Peaks.
- Nordic trails at Sun Peaks is open and opens this weekend at Stake Lake.
- Pineview and Ironmask Hills are officially closed but hikers can access the east end of Pineview over to Aberdeen.
- We are still posting information on Facebook about outdoor hikes so check there for more.
