KHC and Facebook
Kamloops Hiking Club communicated through Facebook in its early years and a group called Kamloops Hiking Club was set up. Before there were registered members, fees, waivers, a website, and so on, a loosely-knit group used the Facebook Group to set events and share. As the Club grew, things changed.
- The Kamloops Hiking Club Group grew to hundreds, then over a thousand, and is still growing. We changed the name to just Kamloops Hiking since 90% of the group members were not club members. At this point there are 1667 members. We do share some club photos there but non-members also share questions, thoughts, photos, etc. It is a moderated group (by us).
- We formed the Kamloops Hiking Club (Members Only) group to allow for sharing and communication for current members only. Each year we remove some names and add new ones, depending on who has joined for the year. We can share posts from this group to the Facebook page (see #3 below).
- We also have a Facebook page – Kamloops Hiking Club. In a Facebook group all members can post and share, but in a page, only admins can post. The page is sort of the business face of the Club on Facebook. We post information on upcoming events, we share a few images of past events (taken from our Facebook Group shares), and we post announcements as needed on that page. Anything directly posted to the Facebook page will also appear on the website in the Facebook Feed widget on the website (this is set up by the webmaster). We cannot feed Facebook Groups posts since groups have privacy limitations
