Event Categories and Widgets
Since the beginning we have had event categories – hikes, snowshoeing, paddling, backpacks, camps, social events, etc. Some events are categorized more than one way. For example, a Camp and Hike could also be listed as a paddling event if that is what the hike leader intends to do. Categories are used primarily to explain what type of activity it is, but often categories are also linked to KHC guidelines for an event of that type (ie paddling).
In addition, having events connected to a category allows us to group events together and display them on a page or in a widget.
- The main list of all future events has all events on the page (all categories). A widget on the top at the left on the front page links us to that page.
- That main page is a combination of events open for registration or already fully booked, events in draft form not yet ready for registration, and tentative events for the future.
- A widget on the front page called “Just Ahead” only lists upcoming events over the next month (or so).
- A widget on the left side of the front page lists published backpacks and camps that have set dates and are planned for a “go-ahead.”
- For events scheduled or tentatively planned for next year, there is a widget on the right side listing the events. It includes Backpacks and Camps for 2021 and Tentative Events for 2021.
As backpacks and camps are planned, some become set with established dates and are then published by the hike leader as planned events. They will appear in the Backpacks and Camps widget on the left. If an event is tentative in nature (and categorized that way), it will appear on the right side widget only. Events can be edited at any time so if an event moves from tentative to firmly planned, it will automatically appear in the widgets on the left once corrected.
All KHC events are stored in a database established by our main software, Events Manager. Hike leaders become familiar with the process of creating and managing events using the program and a couple of us tweak the system to make sure it is running properly and members can access the information easily.
Recently we edited some of these widgets and pages, all of which can be seen on the website now. Contact us at khc@kamloopshikingclub.net if you have questions.
