Draft Events
Hike leaders post events when they have a plan – date, time, location, group size, and so on. Members need time to check their own schedules and to review the event listing to see if it fits their interests and abilities. Short notice does not usually work out well for members. Early notice for a future event works better, but both hike leaders and memberrs can see their schedules change for a variety of reasons.
Events can be published as Enabled for Registration but they can also be published as Registration Not Yet Enabled.
Draft Events are projected outings with a probable date, time, location, and event details, but for a variety of reasons, a hike leader may wish to delay registration. Personal schedules can change, weather and conditions may not be suitable, the status of trails can change (closed roads, windfall, smoke, logging, etc.), and in the end, the hike leader may just change his/her mind about the event. Draft events do help both hike leaders and members to see potential events well in advance and plan accordingly.
Some of the challenges in opening registration too early include cycles of cancellations, people booking off time only to find the event needs to be moved, and the unpredictable nature of personal schedules.
There are 3 widgets on the main page of the website:
- All Upcoming Events (inc. new events and drafts) – a long list with a link to more events at the bottom
- New Events – a list of events published in the last 2 weeks, including drafts
- Draft Events – only draft events; once the event is enabled for registration, it will not appear in the widget.
There is also a calendar view link.
