Multiplying the Value of Your Membership
Some Ideas for Members:
What is the value of your membership?
- For your $30 and the small amount of time to register, do waivers, etc. you can join in on any organized event that has space.  If you hire a hiking guide, you can expect to pay about $100 per day.  In KHC, you get as many hikes as you can do in a year for $30.
- One golf day will cost you $50 – $100.  One day of skiing will cost you $75 – $100.  Each class of yoga is about $15.  And so on.
- KHC is a non-profit society that uses membership fees to pay for insurance, affiliations, website/online services, banking, equipment, rentals, room rentals, gifts, recognition, and so on, accounting to about 82% of your fees.  Your membership supports a healthy club, so thank you for your support.
But there is greater value in being part of a hiking club:
- you are investing in your personal health by getting exercise and challenging yourself
- you can meet like-minded people that you can network with to hike with during KHC events or on your own schedule
- you can meet new people and potentially form new friendships
- you can explore new places as our hike leaders show you the way to special spots
- a number of our leaders and members are very knowledgeable about local history, geology, natural history, geography, and so on, all part of the KHC hiking experience while on the trails
- KHC also does some community work so you can choose to take a role in the community in a positive manner
- KHC hosts social events and every event has some elements of social activity
What KHC can’t do:
- We can’t schedule events and times to meet your personal schedule.  You just have to pick the ones that will work for you.
- Events fill up and there may be no spaces left for anyone who waits until the last few days. We usually can’t create more spaces or provide another leader to lead another event.  We do not maintain wait lists.  The best strategy is to check the website several times a week.
- Hike Leaders pick locations they know and enjoy and times that meet their personal schedules.  For many of us, we know the best month to do that hike so that’s when we will schedule it.  In shoulder season, the hikes will be good exercise in the outdoors, but it may be on a forest trail or through the grasslands, not to the top of a mountain or to the bottom of a waterfall.
- We pay attention to avalanche danger, fire danger, flooding, ticks, rattlesnakes, bears, cliffs, poor trails conditions, faulty equipment, and so on, but we can’t predict what we may encounter once we get out there.  If members pay attention to the Ten Essentials, we will all be safer.
- We assume members will read the listing carefully to know what to expect and to ask questions if they are unsure, but we can’t know if members register for events they shouldn’t be on without making the effort to read and make some important enquiries.
We want a membership with KHC to be a good experience for everyone, but it is a two-way street in a volunteer environment.  You get out of it what you put into it and so you can multiply the value of your membership by engaging in more events and networking with other members.
