KHChronicles – October, 2020
A mid-month KHC digest:
- All KHC trails and locations pages on the website (255 of them) were edited and updated.  New fields for each location/trail are Risks/Alerts and Location/Area, both of which are now included in each event listing.
- KHC established a policy with regard to BC Air Quality Guidelines.  A link to the latest conditions is provided on the right side of the website.  KHC’s policy is (in short), if the forecast is for Moderate Risk (4-6), then hikers are advised to carefully consider their participation and hike leaders are asked to consider modifying or rescheduling the planned outing.   If the forecast is for High Risk (7-10+), then the event should be rescheduled or cancelled.  This is really only an issue during forest fire season.
- A meeting of hike leaders has been called for Oct. 23rd to start preliminary discussions for backpacks and camps for 2021.  Hike leaders have been invited to attend in person with social distancing or via Zoom.
- At the next Board meeting (in winter) a topic of discussion will be Membership (numbers, dates, steps) for February, 2021.
- Here is FMCBC’s latest newsletter.
- Here is BC Parks Foundation’s October Newsletter.
- The Jack Gregson Trail will be closed permanently by CP Rail on November 9th for its railyard expansion.
- KHC is looking for more hike leaders.  Please contact us if you would like to help.  A list of active, inactive, and past hike leaders can be found on the Hike Leaders Page.
- Welcome to Jeff Wood, a new KHC Co-leader.
- Welcome to Paulette Viezzer, our newest hike-leader-in-training.
Some Talking Points:
- KHC publishes all of its events to the website and then members register for events online, but there is no requirement to do it this way.  Other clubs publish a schedule and then members call or email the leader to discuss, register, or cancel.   Any leader who wants to do it this way can publish an event and indicate her/his intention to do it by email and/or telephone.
- KHC does not organize hikes for the public, nor is it allowing guests during the epidemic.  During an epidemic, this is unlikely to change.
- KHC’s schedule is a result of individual leaders choosing a date and place on their own.  There is some discussion at the Board level about providing a forum for leaders to discuss plans, possibilities, and opportunities for the months ahead.  A preliminary in-person or Zoom meeting is in planning stages.  At the same time, is there a way for members to forward their wish list hikes and snowshoe outings?
Some Featured Photo Galleries:
- Some of our KHC members are talented photographers.  We have used two of their photos for this newsletter and we are providing links to some of their photos.
