KHChronicles – November, 2020
A mid-month KHC digest:
- Although KHC is not currently organizing hikes or on the snow events, we hope that members will still get out and enjoy the outdoors in small social-distanced groups.
- We are in the process of adding new maps to all of our KHC Trail/Locations pages.  These are only visible to logged-in members.  This is a big project so it will take most of the winter to complete the task.  The maps are there for use by hike leaders, co-leaders, and current members.
- A new drone video for Raft Mountain is now available on YouTube – Raft Mountain, BC. A hike to the summit of Raft Mountain is planned for the summer.
- Shuswap Trails issues a weekly update on a Facebook page. You can sign up for notifications on the page (link).
- Revised Trail page – Abbey Road Hills
- Any event that is tentative and planned farther into the future can now be shared by hike leaders in a widget on the right side of the website (2021 Events).  Hike leaders need to pick just one event category – Tentative Future Hikes.
- A new KHC video is now available on YouTube and a mini-player is inserted below.
- Even though snow has fallen, it will take some time before conditions are suitable for snowshoeing.   For all snow activities, the volume of snow has to accumulate enough to help the snow “set up.”  That is why ski hills and cross country trail systems run their machines over runs and trails.  The snow gets consolidated and a series of melt and freeze cycles creates a base.  Additional snows fall, but skis and snowshoes don’t sink right through the snow once it has set up properly.
Some Talking Points:
- KHC adjusts its policies to be in sync with the BC Health Officer’s orders.  The recent order restricts group size to 6, even in outdoor settings.   Therefore posted events have been limited to 6 (inc. hike leaders).  A second group could be added, but must have a second leader and a different start time.  This policy was discussed by the Board of Directors and hike leaders have been advised.  At this time, though, all group activities have been suspended.
- Although KHC won’t be offering group events, we will be sharing recommendations for hikes, snowshoes, paddles, and backpacks over the next phase of the pandemic.
