KHC Newsletter – October, 2019
KHChronicles –
- Our thanks to the hike leaders who led events in October- Mark and Janet Hopkins, Ian and Liz Cornish, Paulette Gendron, Doug Smith, Judy Karr, John and Carole Moslin, Gerry Hoye, Wendy Kineshanko, Sasha Lees, and Ernie Carson.  Hike leaders were also supported by co-leaders for most events.
- A welcome back to Ray Conway.
- The winner of the October draw for hike leaders was John Moslin.
- KHC participates in the Adopt-a-Trail Program with the City of Kamloops.  More Information can be found in this news article – link.
- The KHC Board of Directors is meeting soon.  For discussion will be the usual topics – Member Registration, Fees, Risk Management, Budgets, Calendar, Guests, Dogs, Minors, Hike Leaders Recruitment and Recognition, guidelines and expectations, Board succession, equipment, and so on.  If members would like to provide feedback in advance, they are encouraged to contact a Board Member (link).
- Here is FMCBC’s October Newsletter.
- Here is BC Parks Foundations Newsletter.
- Summer camps for 2020 will see their first planning in the winter and they may be posted in late winter or early spring. A few backpacks or camps are posted later in the spring. If you have a favorite, let a hike leader know your interests.
- FMCBC is looking for volunteers to serve on these committees: Risk Management, Fundraising and Outreach and Communications.  Contact us if you would like to help with this provincial program.
- Some of us heard Laval St. Germain speak at Wings Over the Rockies this year.  Outside Magazine has an article on him – The Superhuman Abilities of Laval St. Germain.
- Tourism Kamloops has been expanding its coverage of information on local hiking trails.  Kamloops Hiking Club is included on the main page.  Go to the link to see more information – Hike/Tourism Kamloops.
- KHC has been offering over 250+ events per year for a few years now.  All of these events are planned and organized by hike leaders on their personal schedules and based on their interests.   There is no meeting or collective communication process to plan ahead, but the Board of Directors monitors trends and receives feedback, and communicates accordingly.  Other hiking clubs have seasonal planning meetings and appoint a coordinator, but up to now, we have been successful with empowering our leadership team to make choices that benefit the Club.  Nevertheless, we are looking for more leaders and co-leaders to offer moderate events on weekends on established trails (details).
- As fall settles in, most events will be in the local area.
- At this time, newsletters are published at the end of each month and if updates are needed, it is edited at that time.  When membership renewals and new memberships are pending and for a while afterward, KHC will publish newsletters twice a month.
- Snowshoeing opportunities will arise when snows blanket the hills.  KHC has a Snowshoeing Primer on its website – Get Ready for Snowshoeing
- KHC is insured for and has guidelines in place for trail running, nordic skiing, cycling and trail riding, paddling, and other related outdoor activities. Â Leaders can choose to offer these types of events for members. Â Â For many of our snowshoeing events, trail skiers may be welcome to join the trek across the snow.
- KHC is actively recruiting new co-leaders too.  Some information is provided here (our thanks to Paulette Gendron):
No Events at this time.
