KHC Newsletter – May 12, 2019
KHChronicles
- Warm weather has finally arrived and we will be starting to hike in higher locations over the next month.
- Sometimes we hear the message that all the hikes are full, so we check to see if this is the case. Â In this week, we hosted 8Â events and every one of them had openings. Â On this weekend, 5 events were listed and there was 21 open spaces! Â The correct statement should be “Some events fill up. “
- Backpacking spaces on popular routes do fill up.  For popular locations, getting a campsite booking is very difficult.  For some of these bookings the deadline to get the spaces is in the fall or winter so they fill up 6 months in advance.  Backpacking is for small groups and with 270 members, diligent members will book the spaces before casual browsers.  We would like to have more backpacking events, but we have a limited number of active leaders who backpack and they commit to what they can do well in advance.
- Watch for a Backpacking 101 Clinic to be posted soon.
- Thanks to the hike leaders who led events in April – Ian Cornish, Doug Smith, Paulette Gendron, Sam Chow, Katherine Roberts, Tom Blackburn, Sheila Powell, Ernie Carson, Judy Karr, Deana Rice, and John Moslin.
- The April winner of the gift certificate prize draw for hike leaders was Ian Cornish.
- Some hike leaders have been traveling in April and some are scheduled to travel in May.  The actual number of active hike leaders varies from month to month.
- Congratulations to Lisa Boutry who has posted her first event as a hike leader.
- Our first paddling event is posted and now ready for registration.   KHC’s paddling events are scheduled from May through September.
- Here is FMCBC’s April Newsletter.
- Here is the Province of BC’s policy on ebikes on trails.
- KHC is supporting Kamloops Outdoors Club’s grant application to purchase a brush cutter.  If successful, this would be available for use by the Kamloops Thompson Trails Alliance too.
- Here is how to tell a rattlesnake from a gopher snake – Rattlesnake or Gopher Snake? (Our thanks to Gerry for this)
- Our Member Services Director has reached out to the (57) members we haven’t seen out yet.  KHC will keep contact with these new members throughout the spring.
- Newsletters are being published every 2.5 to 3 weeks at this time, but we will also continue to post shorter news items on the widget on the right hand side of the website.
- Draft Events are now separately listed in their own space on the website.  Most Draft Events are future events, planned but not yet enabled for registration.  More information on Draft Events can be found in a Short News article on the right side.
- We have also added a short announcements widget on the right side of the website at the top.
- For members, if you have a minor who has completed the Assumption of Risk Form, the names should be listed on the bottom of the Minors page.  Similarly, guests who have completed a waiver should have their names listed on the bottom of the Guests page.  Contact us if a name is missing (khc@kamloopshikingclub.net).
- It may be more efficient/direct to contact a hike leader than to post a comment for a particular event.  The hike leader usually lists their email address or their phone number.  There is also a Contact a Hike Leader page on the website.
- For most events, carpooling is organized at the meetup spot, not in advance.  The exception to this practice is when the member lives out of town.
- Kamloops Naturalist Club has organized a Clean up Mother Nature on Mothers’ Day Event for May 12 from 9:30 to 1:30 in the Dewdrop Range. The meetup area is on the Frederick Road.  More information can be found on their Facebook page.
No Events at this time.
