KHC Newsletter – January, 2020
KHChronicles –
- Our thanks to the hike leaders who led events in January – Ian and Liz Cornish, Paulette Gendron, Doug Smith, John and Carole Moslin, Gerry Hoye, Sam Chow, Sasha Lees, Lisa Boutry, Dianne Smith and Lori Rilkoff. Hike leaders were also supported by co-leaders and informal member-leaders for most events.
- The winner of the January draw for hike leaders was Paulette Gendron.
- Renewal of memberships starts February 1st.   Look for a button on the front page (right side and only visible if logged in) to link to the renewals page.
- Renewing members do not have to fill out a registration form.  They need to complete a new waiver (remember the email confirmation too) and to pay their annual fees (via etransfer).
- Registration for new memberships begins February 15th, for activation March 1st and later.  We will have a button/link to the registration page on the right side of the website page on Feb. 15 and it will stay active until the club is full, which usually happens by the end of March.
- Trailforks has been updated with more local trails.  The app is excellent for use on the trails (requires mobile data).  Here is a link to the Stake Lake Trails.
- Updates on access and snow conditions in Wells Gray is available online – link.
- Here is FMCBC’s January Newsletter
- Keep this date on your calendar – 2020 KHC AGM/Social – March 29th at the Sports Council Room on McArthur Island. The event is now posted to the website.
- There is a new page on the website entitled Difficulty of Events (under Event Info on the menu bar).  The page explains how we describe or try to understand how difficult an event might be for both leaders, members, and guests.  A link has also been added to all event listings (at the bottom).
- We have updated our KHC Standard Operating Procedures.  Members can see the document through this link or through a link on the Hike Leaders Resources page.  The document provides important information to hike leaders and directors about how the club works.
- We have added a note to event listings reminding members and their guests that we try to make events scent-free where possible out of respect for those who are sensitive to scents.
- Some end of the year stats for members are provided here.
- We had 273 members in 2019.
- We had 200 females and 73 males.
- We hosted about 220 events in 2019 (some events were rescheduled, cancelled, or were multiple days so the number is an approximation).
- A more full report will be provided in the President’s Report prior to the AGM.  We will also provide the Treasurers Financial Report to members prior to the AGM.
- As we wind down the 2019 – 2020 year (which ends Feb. 29) we would like to thank our members for joining in our event outings over the last year.  For those who will rejoin, starting Feb. 1, we look forward to hiking with you in the upcoming year.  For those not planning to renew, thanks for being a member in the last year.   A special thanks to the hike leaders and directors of the club for providing a robust program for KHC.
- Backpacking events and camps are being posted now because leaders and members have to book their holidays, they have to make campsite bookings or apply for permits, or have to set their calendars for the summer months.  If members wait until spring to check on these, they may find that the events are already full.  We do anticipate more events being posted, though, although event planning is entirely at the discretion of individual hike leaders.  The reality is that the spaces get booked by the diligent and anyone who waits too long just has to wait for cancellations.
- Mild weather conditions has made conditions more challenging for snowshoeing or hiking in the hills.  A number of hiking events will be at lower elevations, or snowshoe events will be at higher elevations in this phase of winter.
KHC has an extensive library of trail information for local hiking, only available online when logged-in, a benefit to members. New updates (trail info, maps, GPS tracks, events, images, etc.) are now available for the following trails (click a link for each page). KHC’s website has more area information than any published book.
- Long Lake
- Lower Rose Trails
- Balancing Rock Hills
- Porcupine Creek Route (Marble Range)
- Canyon Creeks Trails (Wells Gray)
- Sylvia Falls Trail/Mahood River
- Triple Decker Falls (Wells Gray)
- Hull Hill Trails
Developing these maps, tracks, links and specific information is time-consuming so a few will be updated each month, mostly over the winter season.
Trailforks has updated its cross country/biking/snowshoeing/hiking trails map:
