KHC Newsletter – February, 2020
KHChronicles –
- In February, KHC organized 24 events with a total of 300 event spaces. Â Some events (4) were full, but 83% had open spaces at event time.
- Our thanks to the hike leaders who led events in February – Lisa Boutry, Paulette Gendron, Doug Smith, Lori Rilkoff and Dianne Smith, Ernie Carson, John and Carole Moslin, Gerry Hoye, Sasha Lees, Ian and Liz Cornish, Sam Chow and Margo Mercier.  Hike leaders were also supported by co-leaders for most events.
- Our thanks to the organizers of the KHC Slideshow and Social – Sheila and Frith Powell, Kathleen Nadler and Dave Schmidt, Ernie Carson, John and Carole Moslin, and Ted and Lois Hunter.  We hope to make a slideshow an annual event.
- The winner of the February draw for hike leaders was Lori Rilkoff.
- Membership renewals are moving along at a slow-steady rate.  New membership registrations are also coming in at a rate of a couple each day.  At the current rate, we will fill up around the end of March, but that is just an estimate, and we may choose a later date.  Every year we hear from seasonal hikers later later in spring who would like to have joined, but the club is already closed to new members by that time.  KHC closes down new memberships when the current capacity is reached, which is estimated as 250 – 300 members.
- Our thanks to Frith Powell and Margo Mercier for their hard work on forms, fees, waivers, and accounts.  There is a lot of website work too, managed by the webmaster.
- Our New Members Liaison Director (Dianne) will be contacting new members in March.  They will receive a New Members Newsletter via email.
- The website has been reorganized again to meet current priorities.  The Menu Bar (right below the header) has links to updated pages containing all the information that Club members may need.  Below the menu bar are widgets (left and right).  Widgets on the left side are now specialized, dividing the upcoming events into three blocks.  The top block is a list of upcoming events covering the next month or two.   The second widget lists future events that are planned, but are still in draft (tentative) status.  The third widget lists Backpacks and Camps, mostly planned for the summer.
- Many of the listed backpacks and camps are fully booked.  Leaders needed to book campsites and holidays long in advance.  There will be more posted and there will be cancellations for anyone wanting to join in one of these events.  The cycle will restart again in December – February for the next year.
- Categories have also been revised. Â Event categories are a way of explaining what kind of event it is, but are also a way of tagging groups of event types to allow them to be displayed in different places and/or in different ways. Â More information on event categories can be seen on the Event Categories page (under Event Info).
- A new event category recently added is called “SGSO.” Â Click the category link for any event that is listed as a SGSO event for more information.
- Keep this date on your calendar – March 29th for the KHC AGM and Social at the Sports Council Room on McArthur Island.  Details can be found in the event listing.
- Society Act requirements include the President’s Report and Treasurer’s Financial Report.  These will be posted to the AGM event page prior to the event.
- A note from hike leader Lisa Boutry:”KHC Members – The Club AGM & Potluck is coming up on Sunday, March 29, 2020. If you have not already signed up for this event, I encourage you to do so – the food, fun, and socializing at the AGM’s always make them memorable events. Not to mention the door prizes…..! I am putting a call out to members for donations – can you help?Â
– Do you personally know any local business owners who might be willing to donate?– Do you have an artisan skill with which you could donate: Â hiking-related paintings/art/framed photography, woodworking, sewing, weaving? Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â If so, please email me, Lisa Boutry, at lisaconda@gmail.com, and I will happily add you to the Donor List and/or follow up with any business contact you can provide.
Thank you and I hope to see you all at this year’s AGM!  Lisa B.” - Here is FMCBC’s February Newsletter.
- Some thoughts on hiking in March are offered in this News item – Transition Time.
- The meet-up spot on Ord Road may not be available to us as construction takes place in the area.  At this point Ord Road from the east faces traffic delays.  The approach from the west is okay for now, but we may lose access in the near future.  Hike leaders may need to choose alternate locations like Aviation Way, Tranquille River, Tranquille Wildlife Area parking, Brock Arena, or another spot and may need to choose to list “Check the Event Listing” and then provide the information in the event listing.
- There will be major highway construction project this summer on the TransCanada Highway through Kicking Horse Pass, diverting traffic through Radium.  For any backpack or camp in the Rockies this summer, this will mean more driving time and delays to plan for.
- As we move ahead in 2020 there will be interruptions in our plans – weather, highway access/blockages, virus outbreaks, forest fires, backroad access challenges, and more.  Hike leaders will manage each issue as it arises and support from members will be required to find solutions in the days ahead.
New Members
Welcome to all new members.  Renewals and new memberships are still ongoing, but we have quite a few new members who can start booking into events starting March 1st.  Here are the steps to be taken:
- Once all steps (registration. waivers, and fees) are completed, our Member Services Director sends out a confirmation email to each individual through their registered email address.
- Member accounts are set up on the website by us for each new member.  Member Services will send out an email to each new member with the login credentials (username and temporary password).  New members then login and set a new password and edit their profile (save your login and password somewhere where you can retrieve it over the next year).  If you forget your login, use your email address and click the Lost Your Passsword link.
- Once these steps are completed, new members can book into events: login, pick an event of interest that is not already full, review the event listing carefully, and then complete the event registration step at the bottom of the event listing.  A confirmation email will be sent to you for each successful booking.
- A help video is available for new members at the bottom of the Website Help page (under More Info/Help on the Menu Bar). Â Â Information on all aspects of the Club are found on website pages (found by hovering your cursor over the Menu Bar) and new members are encouraged to take the time to review the information.
KHC has an extensive library of trail information for local hiking, only available online when logged-in, a benefit to members. New updates (trail info, maps, GPS tracks, events, images, etc.) are now available for the following trails (click a link for each page). KHC’s website has more area information than any published book.
- Brussels Hills
- Battle Mountain
- Melba Creek (snowshoe area)
- Skmana Lake (snowshoe area)
- Savona to Sabiston Creek Trail
- Mission Flats Park
- Bush Lake/Dogwood Marshes
- Mt. Rose-Swanson
Developing these maps, tracks, links galleries, and specific information is time-consuming so a few will be updated each month, mostly over the winter season.
No Events at this time.
