KHC Newsletter – December 30, 2018
KHChirps
- As winter progresses we will see more snowshoeing and less hiking in the next 2 months.  At this time, conditions are changeable, marginal for both hiking and snowshoeing at lower elevations.   The “best bets” for snowshoeing at this time are the Larch Hills, Silver Star, and Sun Peaks, but we should soon be able to snowshoe at Harper Mountain, Stake Lake, and the McQueen Lake area.
- Overlander Ski Club has a new georeferenced trails map for Stake Lake.  Here is a link.
- Here is FMCBC’s December Newsletter.
- Thanks to the hike leaders who posted events in December – Judy Karr, Gerry Hoye. John and Carole Moslin, Lois and Ed Hunter, Ernie Carson, Katherine Roberts, Sam Chow, Paulette Gendron, and Doug Smith.
- Welcome to new members Keiran Rankin and Amber Archibald.  The Board has invited them to join 2 months in advance of the new member registration because of Keiran’s leadership potential with KHC.  We have an approved policy that supports bringing on new members at any time who may be able to help the club with future event leadership.
- A study will begin soon on the effectiveness of Avalanche Bulletins (from AvalancheCanada.ca). “We are interested to hear from backcountry users of all experience levels about how they use the bulletin and how the existing products could be enhanced to address their needs. The results of this study will provide important information for improving avalanche safety information products in Canada.”  Anyone interested can register at http://www.avbulletin.avalancheresearch.ca/
- When Google changed its policies regarding integrating Google maps into websites, we took them out of our event listings and locations pages for a while.  We have since renewed that integration.  Google Maps assist hike leaders and members with maps for event listings and location pages on the website.
- A preview of the (more challenging) Summer Summits Series can be seen at this link.
