KHC Newsletter – April 8, 2018
KHChirps:
- The featured image for this week’s newsletter is an image of a painting done by member David Langevin.  A number of David’s come from photos taken from KHC hikes, backpacks, and snowshoes.  Here is a link to his most recent paintings – David Langevin Paintings
- Ed Hennan is another member with a talent for photography.  You can see his images at this site – Ed Hennan on Flickr
- Our thanks to the Active Hike Leaders who have posted events in the last week – Judy Karr, Sheila Powell, Gerry Hoye, Paulette Gendron, Doug Smith, Michelle Dressler, and Katherine Roberts.
- When leaders plan events some look at their own personal schedule and plan well in advance.  The events may be posted as a Draft category and then enabled for registration when the time and date becomes more firm.  Some leaders wait for a 7 day forecast and plan events on a shorter time frame, based on the expectation of good weather and an opening in their personal schedules. In addition, leaders have to take into account conditions for the trail at each location, especially in shoulder season.
- Members can comment to an event for more information or to ask a question, but there is no guarantee the leader will notice it in time so another more direct way to deal with event-related issues/questions is to contact the Hike Leader by email.  Use the Contact a Hike Leader Page for an email address.
- The Guests Portal is open, but we have adjusted the process to require a member-sponsor for registration.  Members (including Hike Leaders) can bring friends, family, or contacts through this process.  It remains the Hike Leaders decision, though, whether to allow Guests on an event or not (it does add more work for the leader before and during the event).  Guests are welcome, but we reserve event spaces primarily for members.  Details are found on the Guests Portal.
- Lower elevation hikes are clear of snow now, but some mud may linger in north-facing sections.  Higher elevation trails still have snow.  Most hiker leaders will choose a lower to mid-elevation route in April
KHC on Social Media:
- KHC has a presence on several social media sites.
- The primary Facebook site for members is the Kamloops Hiking Club (Members Only) Group which allows all Club members to post to the site.
- A different Facebook group is Kamloops Hiking which has 1385 group members and was formerly the KHC primary Facebook group but it grew too large to confine it to Club-based posts.  It is still administered by KHC, but it can have a mix of posts from the public and from members.
- KHC also has a Kamloops Hiking Club Facebook Page. A Facebook page is a public profile specifically created for businesses, brands, celebrities, causes, and other organizations. Unlike personal profiles, pages do not gain “friends,” but “fans” – which are people who choose to “like” a page.
- We can use the Share button to share posts, photos, videos, events, announcements, etc. between these sites.
- KHC also has a YouTube channel with 17 videos to date – Kamloops Hiking Club
- KHC has a Twitter Account too – @kamloopshikingC.  This is mainly a low-key automatic feed from our website.
- KHC has a low-key Instagram account too – Kamloopshikingclub
- There are links to all of these accounts on the upper right corner of the website.
