KHC Newsletter – April 7, 2019
KHChronicles
- KHC is a club run by volunteers.  Everyone helps out.  Hike Leaders plan, organize, and lead events.  Board members take care of various organizational responsibilities.  All members help by finding out how the club works (it’s all on the website) and by following KHC Guidelines and Expectations (link).    This requires teamwork and everyone playing their part.
- For new members, a good page to start with is the Successful Bookings (link).
- We have noticed that some new members arrive for a hike without a pack.   Although the Ten Essentials is just a guideline, we do expect some of the basics every time (and most of them on any longer hike) like additional clothing, fluids, medications, and a first aid kit (everyone brings one).  Unless you have very large pockets, you need a pack for KHC hikes.
- KHC has no waiting list system.  It’s up to each member to check the listings on a regular basis.
- New backpacking events are still being drafted and there will be some cancellations in the ones that were set up in the fall and winter, so watch the website for updates.
- We encourage all members to check out Kamloops Outdoor Club. They organize great events and do things differently from KHC.  We have a few members who belong to both clubs.  Here is a link.
- The Avalanche Center lab is looking for feedback on avalanche warnings/bulletins.  Members or other interested parties can respond at this site – https://avbulletin.avalancheresearch.ca/
- The winner of last month’s prize draw for Hike Leaders was Sam Chow.
- Katherine Roberts has stared a GoFundMe campaign (Memorial-Bench-for-Clive-Giolma) to raise funds for a memorial bench in Peterson Creek to honor our friend Clive Giolma.
- KHC has adopted a trail in the Valleyview Nature Park with the City’s Adopt a Trail Program.  We had an event in the fall and we are looking for someone to lead another outing for this spring.  We have made it very easy to organize.  Contact us at info@kamloopshikingclub.net.
- KHC is experimenting with offering large group hikes from time to time.  The goal is provide some events for all members.  The first event of this type was in March at Battle Bluff and the second is scheduled for April 14 for Buse Hill (link).  Organizing and managing a large group is a challenge, so help is always appreciated.
- To provide more opportunities for families to participate in club events, we have introduced the category Family Hikes.  AR Forms (a waiver for minors) are still required and more information can be found on the Minors Page.
- We have about 280 members at this time.
- Some demographics on our membership.  Women – 193 (69%) and Men- 87 (31%).  Average age = 54.
- See you On the Trails.
