KHC Newsletter – April 22. 2018
KHChirps
- Very few events have been completely full for months, but we are now seeing them fill up more since the fair-weather hikers are now getting active and registering. For the next 6 weeks anyone who wants to book a space will have to check more often. There are almost always cancellations too. Five of our Hike Leaders are away in Asia at this time and 5 of our “active” leaders are in fact “inactive” at this time so it just a few of us who are posting events, doing the best we can.
- KHC has retired its Spot devices this year and has purchased an InReach Explorer+ device. The InReach will be available for hike leaders on backpacking events or any hike in remote terrain. With only one device, a booking system has been developed.
- Some Scrambling events are now being posted. Scrambling is hiking with some reasonable climbing sections. KHC has adopted the Yosemite Scale for scrambling – link.
- Three draft events were posted and some feedback was received, helping to guide our decisions for the future. There was some interest for recreational paddling on local lakes so the first event has now been scheduled. There was little interest in downriver paddling so that event will be removed soon. There was some limited interest in scrambling so two events have been posted. Feedback on these types of events is still accessible through these links – recreational paddling | downriver paddling | scrambling.
- Another poll for members will be available on the front page of the website, following the current polling at the end of the month.
- KHC has a group of 5 members (all hike leaders) still in Asia but they will be back in Canada soon. Another group of members are on their way to hiking in the National Parks in Utah.
- A reminder to all members that we are all expected to carry an adequate first aid kit. The hike leader should also have one, but when a situation arises on the trail, we need to pool our resources and expertise.
- Newly posted events appear in the middle widget of the website (Recently Added Events). We have reorganized the list so that they display by calendar order, not by when they were posted. As a result, some of the newest events may be on the bottom of the list.
- A FAQ has been added to the website, mostly for visitors to the website, but it may also be of interest to new members (link).
- A poll on types of hikes is now on the front page of the website. Members are asked to participate.
- We have had a couple of new members through the Guest Portal process. Although the Guest Portal will remain open for a while, we anticipate periods of time when we won’t be able to respond to requests in a timely manner as our key volunteers will be traveling over the next few months. Anyone wanting to secure a Guest membership should do so soon.
