KHC Newsletter
Happy Fall Hiking! A big thank you to all our KHC hike leaders who were able to lead hikes for the end of summer and beginning of fall in September. The smoke limited some of the events last month, but it is still a wonderful time of year to be out exploring trails with good company.
Congratulations to Doug Smith who won September’s KHC hike leader recognition prize of a 50$ gift certificate for Atmosphere. Thank you for all the hard work in leading hikes for our club!
Beginning this month the club will be having a draw at the end of the month to award a prize to members who join a hike. When a member joins a hike their name will be entered in a draw for a prize. Prizes will be drawn by Di Smith at the end of the month. Winners will be notified by Di. A thank you to Lisa Boutry who has been collecting prizes for our club.
Thanks to Bruce Bunko who has been maintaining the club’s birdhouses in the protected lac du bois grasslands area near Long Lake. More information on Lac du bois grasslands here and here.
In September and moving into October we have seen some air quality issues due to fires south of us. KHC has air quality guidelines for such situations. Environment Canada has established a scale of air quality which is most relevant during forest fire season. In accordance with these guidelines, KHC follows these practices:
- Low Risk – no change to planned events
- Moderate Risk – participants should be advised of the increased health risk. Members may choose to cancel their registration. Leaders should modify, cancel, or reschedule their events.
- High Risk – leaders should cancel or reschedule the event.
An Updated air quality index can be found here.
A reminder to members, if you have a concern or complaint about an event, contact the hike leader first through email or phone. If you feel that your concern or complaint was not solved then contact the KHC president, Paulette Gendron.
More information can be found on the club’s web page under ‘Guideline and Expectations’.
Members are asked to directly contact the hike leader if there is an issue, rather than posting a negative comment on the website. Comments sit on the front page of the site for many days, whereas an issue can be resolved quickly between the persons involved, without “broadcasting” concerns in public. Inappropriate comments may be deleted and certainly don’t support a positive environment.
For all KHC hike leaders who are able or interested in attending, we will be having a Backpack/Camp collaboration meeting Friday, October 23rd at 6:00 pm at the Kamloops Francophone Association in person and via zoom. Refreshments will be provided. This is an opportunity to discuss future backpacks and camps for summer 2021. We will share ideas and areas we wish to explore and possibilities for co-leading.
