This will be a small group outing to Yak Peak off the summit of the Coquihalla Hwy. This is an extremely challenging and steep hike and is only 6 km round trip, but it climbs some 840 m in the 3 km to the summit.  We will climb to the main summit, then traverse on the way back to the lower smaller summit.  We will allow at least 3 hours each way. The trail starts just north of the Zopkios parking area to start the hike at 0900. This hike will not run in any type of adverse weather, and we will take enough time for everyone to complete the outing.  We will meet at the Zopkios rest area on the westbound side of the Coquihalla Highway. This will take about 1 3/4 hours from Kamloops.  By this time the KHC may be organizing car pools (Covid rules) so keep an eye on the website for updates.
Yak is the highest of the summits on Zopkios Ridge and has superb views from the summit across to Alpaca, Vicuna and Guanaco peaks, and across the highway to Needle Peak. It is a climbers trail so is flagged but is extremely steep with loose rock and slab sections. You will need good boots, hiking poles, and bring gloves for the descent as there is a section with a chain to help to get past a slab section.  There is no flat sections, it is either steep up, or steep down.  But it is worth it!!
We will meet at Hillside meet up spot at 0800 if you wish to carpool or convoy.
