Description
This is an extremely challenging hike with an average grade of 28%. At the time of posting there is no smoke at the top of the Coquihalla and this hike is very dependant on weather and smoke conditions. The hike itself is a 6 km round trip with an elevation gain of 840 m and could take 5-6 hours as it is very steep and we will take numerous breaks.
As you drive north on the Coquihalla Highway you will see the soaring sweeping granite wall of Yak Peak just behind the Zopkios rest stop. The trail is a climbers’ trail that has been improved over the years and leads to a spectacular viewpoint, both from the main peak and the smaller southern sub-peak, which we will add in on our way down.
It is essential to have good boots and hiking poles. There is no water on the route so bring plenty. We will be spending time at the top, weather permitting, so extra layers and plenty of food is advised.
We will meet at the Hillside meet up spot at 0800 to car pool, the drive is approx. 1 1/4 hours.
