A Wednesday (not this time) Wander in the Woods
- all www@ events will require reasonable fitness; expect some hills
- meet at the Batchelor Hills meet-up spot
- drive to trailhead – 25 km return – $3
- snowshoe for 2-2.5 hours from Lac du Bois
- mostly off-trail snowshoeing
- we will follow the double track southward then strike off up the side of Wheeler Mountain on an old single track (elevation gain of 370 feet in 0.8 km) up to a viewpoint for lunch
- we will wander through the grasslands a bit on the return route
- dress for the conditions and review the Ten Essentials, please (everyone should have their own first aid kit too)
- each participant should carry a contact/emergency information card in his/her upper compartment of the backpack in case of an accident or unforeseen problem
- please ensure that you have edited your website user profile to include your cell phone number, emergency contact, etc. since that is the information that the hike leader will have on
- there will be a www@ event most Wednesdays for the winter season, many of them on snowshoes, as personal schedules permit
- bring something to sit on for lunch
- we will stick together for safety; all www@ events are group hikes/snowshoes
- the end times will be fluid since there is no way to predict weather, driving conditions, pace of the group, decisions made while out on the trail, etc. If you have an afternoon deadline, it is best to not register
- snowshoeing events – poles are recommended for stability
- most snowshoe events will be on forest tracks and may involve crossing some deadfall and will always have some uneven footing and possible hazards; some experience in off-trail ‘shoeing is very helpful
- bring a bag for snowshoes and snowy belongings if you are carpooling
- most events are dog-friendly, but owners should consider the air temperature, snow depth and snow conditions
- other hike leaders will offer snowshoeing events on set tracks at Sun Peaks, Larch Hills, Silver Star, Stake Lake, Skmana, etc. These are better for novice snowshoers or anyone with less confidence in off-track snowshoeing and exploring. Most www@ events will be off track routes
- guests are welcome but the sponsoring member must ensure that waivers, event details, fitness requirements, equipment, etc, are all taken care of and it is not extra work for the hike leader or the group
- new – each week we will have a shared item (baked goods, etc.) to share with the group and there will be a planned a group photo for each www@ event at the lunch spot
- later season snowshoe events will include some more challenging routes
- more details to be provided late November
