Description
It has recently snowed quite heavily on Trophy Mountain. As of June 14 there was trace amounts of snow at the trailhead, close to 300mm in the meadows and as much as 450mm on the plateau. I would expect some of this snow to melt prior to the hike Sunday, but there will be a lot remaining.
- Meet up at Paul Lake 8:00 am and drive to Clearwater
- Meet the leader at the Wells Gray info Center at 9:30 and drive up to the trailhead
- The road to the trailhead is a gravel road suitable for most vehicles
- Hike from the trailhead to Sheila Lake Lookout (5 km and 425m elevation gain)
- Cross the Plateau of Tarns and climb to the Long Hill col (3 km and a 180m elevation gain)
- Hike the ridge to Trophy 2 (2.5 km and a 240m elevation gain)
- Return via the same route
The forecast is looking good for the hike, however plan for winter conditions. The plan is to hike to the summit of Trophy 2 in difficult conditions. The conditions may range from sunny with temperatures around 15 in the meadows to below zero with wind and snow up on the ridge. The leader will be bringing a 60l backpack with several layers of clothes, headwear and gloves to allow for the variable conditions.
Snowshoes may be helpful crossing the plateau and the lower elevations of the ridge. The ridge to Trophy 2 is typically small sharp angular boulders. If they are covered in snow, snowshoes would be very helpful.
Please note that we will be keeping a steady pace on steep hills that may be icy – this will be a challenging hike.
We may be doing some scrambling which would not be appropriate for dogs.
The conditions for this hike have changed dramatically than originally envisioned. All participants are asked to read the summary and determine if these new conditions are appropriate for their experience and fitness levels.
