Description

A Zoom meeting on tracks

  • we can use a Mobile phone, a GPS, GPS watch, Fitbit and more devices to track your route
  • what is a track?
  • what do you do to save your track?
  • how do you use a track to assist you with a hike on the same route in the future (trackbacks)?
  • what format are tracks in and what devices can use them?
  • tracks on maps
  • tracks on maps, exports, saving and sharing
  • mobile apps for hikers – AllTrails, Gaia, Trailforks, Geotracker, Garmin, and others
  • exporting tracks to a PC
  • adding tracks from mobile, GPS, Fitbit, Garmin watch to Google Earth
  • saving Google Earth images (as a jpg or png) to PC
  • editing and finishing a map
  • sharing tracks as images or as track files
  • some familiarity with the app or device you will use would help (I can’t help with a device or app I don’t know)
  • some discussion on GPS vs map and compass and general navigation will be included
  • this is more of a general overview to help with using new technology while hiking or snowshoeing
  • informal and social in nature, by design
  • some work is required to prepare for this kind of workshop so it will only be a “go” if there are enough people registered
