Description

An early trip to Raft Mountain in Clearwater.  The Glacier Lilies will be out and the summit will be accessible.

  • Meet up 9:00 and drive to Clearwater
  • Meet the leader at the Wells Gray Info Center at 10:30 for driving instructions
  • Drive up the Raft Mountain FSR – this is a rough 20 km road which requires a high clearance vehicle to make it to the trailhead.

From the trailhead, we hike through a subalpine forest to the meadows.  The Raft Meadows are steep and we will be keeping a steady pace into the alpine.  The ascent to the Raft Mountain ridge is steep, but no scrambling in involved.  Expect some snow to linger in sheltered areas.  If early conditions allow, we will continue along the ridge and scramble summits 2 – 5.  The route down from Raft 5 is a steep off trail route through very loose materials.

The route around the summits requires scrambling along narrow ridges with steep (vertical) drop-offs.

All participants must be very comfortable scrambling ridges with exposure.  If you haven`t done a number of harder or challenging hikes this season, this is likely not a hike for you.

Even on the hottest days it can be windy and cool on the ridges, so bring an extra layer.  Dress for the conditions.

If weather is unfavorable, the event will be rescheduled.

Please comment if you will be bringing a high clearance vehicle to carpool.  The event will be cancelled if enough high clearance vehicles are not available.
