Description
Join Lois Hunter on her “comeback” event featuring one of the KHC’s most popular Spring hikes – the Neskonlith Wildflower Meadows and Aylmer (Star) Lake.
Experience masses of beautiful spring wildflowers in the meadows high above the idyllic village of Chase, the surrounding Shuswap Highlands, and the South Thompson River below.
Bring your camera – the delicate flowers and the breathtaking vistas are worth capturing. Remember – we tread softly, leave no trace, and take nothing with us other than our memories and our pictures.
We will allow a *reasonable* amount of time to photograph the wildflowers and will then steadily move upwards and onwards to Aylmer Lake. The route to Aylmer Lake is a steady, moderate climb that follows an old double-track for approx. 5 km’s on uneven and sometimes rocky terrain. Wear appropriate footwear. There are many opportunities along the way to appreciate breathtaking views of Little Shuswap Lake, the Shuswap Highlands, and the rich agricultural valley below.
Shuswap country is generally a few degrees cooler than that of the Kamloops area and we also generally experience more precipitation. Dress for conditions and keep in mind that we are still in tick season. At 812 metres above sea-level, it’s quite possible that Aylmer (Star Lake), will still have a thin sheet of ice over it and a few traces of wet snow and/or mud in the immediate area and could therefore be a tad chilly.
Prior to the event we must purchase permits to access the meadows as we will be accessing land owned by the Adams Lake Indian Band. Permits are $5.00 per person and can be purchased at the band office the morning of the event. Your name, number of participants in each vehicle, and the license plate number and make/model of your vehicle must be clearly evident on your permit.
No dogs please as there is a possibility we’ll be met by a small band of wild and very friendly (open-range) horses and I don’t want to risk any conflict.
Kamloops folks will meet at the Valleyview Arena just before 9:00 to arrange carpooling to Chase which is approx. 57 kms east on the TCH. Directions to the Adams Lake Indian Band office can be found on Google Maps. Driving time from Kamloops to Chase is approx. 40-45 mins, the drive to the band office about another 5-10 mins.
Lois will meet everyone in the parking area of the Adams Lake Indian Band Office.
