Description

This is a backpack up to a basic campsite by Flatiron lake off the Coquihalla Highway. We will spend two nights at the campsite by Flatiron lake and this will give us a full day to explore the ridges above the lake.   The views are magnificent from the ridge crest.

On our day hiking out you will have the opportunity to drop your big pack and make an ascent to Needle Peak. Flatiron lake and Needle Peak rise on the divide between Boston Bar Creek and the

Coquihalla river.   Needle Peak is a fine-looking rocky summit that is popular as both a summer and a winter destination.   The trail up to Needle Peak is a very challenging route – route finding is necessary.  At the summit there are 360 degree views of many surrounding summits.   The hike will not go on if we do not have some people who know the route.   If you choose not to do the hike up to Needle Peak on the way out be prepared to wait at the trail junction for the rest of the group – could be up to a couple of hours, or spend extra time at the lake before descending to the vehicles.

The first kilometre and a half is a very steep, narrow, rocky, rooty climb so we will take it at a comfortable pace, and take breaks.   Once past this section views open up and the trail travels through mixed forest and meadows, then soon purely alpine as you progress.   You make your way up and down over granite slabs and heathery meadows, with views of Needle Peak and its precipitous face ahead and the mountains with the Himalayan animal names to your rear.

We do not need reservations for the campsite – it is a very basic wilderness site with some sites in bush, and some out in open meadows with fabulous views.   Plenty of water from the lake and creeks but bring water filters.

This outing is very weather dependent as there is a lot of exposure to the elements both on the hike and at the campsite.  It is 8.1 km to the campsite with an elevation gain of 850 metres, and the day hike over the ridges is over more moderate terrain.  All participants must be fully equipped with backpacking equipment and sturdy boots and poles.   Participants should arrange carpooling between themselves as the trailhead is usually very busy with Vancouver side folks.   As we are going in on a Sunday I expect it to be crowded.

**   We will be practicing social distancing throughout this event but will hike as one group to the campsite, taking breaks as necessary on the way.   If any of the group wish to go faster or slower and are sure of the route you are welcome to do so as long as you let the leaders know.
