WEAR TRACTION DEVICES/GAITERS – I scouted the trail today – it’s slippery (snow and slush and a small bit of mud). Hopefully it chills at night and solidifies a bit.👍🏻
The hike route is changed to include Big Pine/Little Pine Trails, instead of Powerline/Ponderosa, to get over to Ridge. Otherwise, same plan.

CAUTION: This is a night hike and will involve hiking up Black Diamond Kenna “Ridge” Trail. You need to be sure of your fitness level, as well as your night/darkness balance ability, before you sign up for this hike. HEADLAMPS MANDATORY……POLES, COSTUMES HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Come out for a good Lil Halloween Hoof up to the top of Kenna to view the 2nd full moon of this October – a “Blue Moon” and “Hunter Moon”. It will be rising up, visible down the valley to the East, and will make a stunning view looking over town! This is also a rare event – the first time since 1944 that a Full Moon will occur on Halloween and be visible across ALL time zones!
Costumes or Costume Hats will be very welcome! (Please think ahead and make sure they are Hiking-Safe). Get into the spirit of Halloween and let your nutty side show!
We will don our headlamps and hike up Prickly Pear Cactus to Ponderosa and the Pipeline Detour, up to Ridge, then along the top of Ridge. This will be a great opportunity to see Mars and possibly Saturn and Jupiter as well! We will stop at the Tower Lookout and gaze at the moon, have some snacks/hot tea/take photos, then head down via Tower Trail. Please be sure to park your vehicle in the lower lot (nearest the road) at the Kenna Gazebo – just in case they lock up the upper lot early.
As per Club Policy, Covid-19 Proper Social Distancing WILL be observed. Let’s stay HEALTHY!
My hiking style is a relaxed one – to best take in all the beauty around us.Hunting new wildflowers and fungi will often cause me to be looking everywhere except the trail.
I like to think up unusual/themed hikes (nature is fun), including Art Hikes, Historical Hikes, Wacky Race Events, Santa Stocking Hunts, Halloween Hikes, Photography Hikes, Astronomy/Full Moon Night Hikes, Fossil Hikes, etc.I also seek out interesting things to see and share in nature – gorgeous waterfalls and views, crazy geological formations, scenic forests, and other very special places.
I’m always open to hearing new hike ideas from other hikers.
