This event is the second ART HIKE event in a series of different art-hikes that I will post at least once a month over the warmer seasonal months. This particular event is a two-Saturday event, as it is too much to do in one day. We will hunt for interesting pieces of driftwood and learn how to make a free-form driftwood wall sculpture similar to the one shown in the featured image, just smaller.
To register, you must email the hike leader and commit to both days.
There is a $4.00 fee per person, to cover the purchase of screws and hanging hardware, which you can pay at the part one meet-up.
PART ONE is on Saturday, June 4, in which we will meet up at the Brocklehurst Dog Park on Aviation Way at 9:30am, drive to the trailhead in caravan style, then hike out to Cooney Bay. Once at Cooney Bay, we will talk about different types of driftwood and what we are looking for, gather driftwood for our sculptures, and then have lunch out on the beach. For part one, you only need to bring some sturdy (not plastic) shopping bags to carry your driftwood in, and maybe some bungie cords to strap them to your pack. Anyone who wishes, may also bring a small folding saw – if you think you might want to cut some pieces while you are out there. I found my folding saw at a local dollar store. Also – bring a lunch as we will have lunch on the beach after our driftwood collecting.
The second part is on Saturday, June 11, where we will get together again at 9:30am, either at my garage, or at a location to be named later (I will provide this info at the meetup for Part One), and I will show you how to assemble your collected pieces into a wall sculpture, using screws and wire. Once you have assembled your sculpture, smaller pieces can be added back at home with a glue-gun.
You will need to bring the following items for Part Two – I cannot supply them: (if you do not own these items already, you can ask your friends and family to lend you them – anyone who is handy will likely have them. If you have never operated a cordless drill, ask the lender to show you how to change the bit, operate the drill, etc., and make sure it is fully charged on the day of Part 2!! If the battery dies, you will be very bored sitting there.) You MUST have these with you to participate on Day 2 – A hand screwdriver will not be enough:
– a fully charged cordless drill/driver
– a 3/32″ (we will use it to pre-drill holes) wood bit
– a #8 (RED) Robertson (square head) drill bit
– a pencil with an eraser
Please email the hike leader if you have any questions, and to register. I am looking for Co-Leaders, so if you are a leader, and are interested in co-leading, please let me know so we can open up more spaces.
