Description
This route to Castle Butte is the least strenuous, beginning on the Red Plateau FS road. The drive to the trailhead is a little rough, definitely high clearance.
The hike to the base of Castle Butte from there is very moderate, with only a couple hundred meters elevation gain.
The scramble/climb up onto the Butte is short and not particularly difficult, but it is very steep and may intimidate some. Not a good choice for anyone who is afraid of heights or unsure of their abilities.
Lunch will be on top with a view. Time permitting, we may make a side trip to another lookout on the Escarpment on the way back.
Meetup will be at 1000 at the Pimple parking area, on the Tranquille-Criss creek road, then convoy 4.5 km up the Red Plateau FS road to the trailhead.
