Description
UPDATE: It’s still a bit cold n windy at Sun Peaks – please dress for the cold, being mindful of bare skin. Bring extra layers, scarf, face-covering, wind-proof toque, etc. Layer, layer, layer! There are some good articles on this website for snowshoeing and cold weather, if you are unsure of preparation. Please practice putting snowshoes on and off beforehand – there are instructional videos available on YouTube. Bring poles (with snow-cap ends at the bottom).
I’ll see you all in the morning!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

A beginner-level event for anyone who would like to try out snowshoeing (and have some social time afterwards in the village at Sun Peaks!). This outing is also suitable for those who have snow-shoe’d but are still having fun on beginner trails. We will begin at the Sun Peaks Nordic Centre and loop out on the Valley Interpretive Trail, Morrisey Ridge Trail, and Cotton Trail, ending up back at the Nordic Centre – approximately 4.5 to 5 km total. The Morrisey Ridge trail is classified as “Beginner/Intermediate”, FYI. The others are strictly “Beginner”. The objective is to have a light, comfortable, relaxed (and funny) introduction to snowshoeing, get some fresh mountain air / exercise, see some lovely scenery, enjoy camaraderie, take a few pics, and have some fun! Afterwards, we will head over to a democratically-selected cafe for hot drinks (tea, coffee) and lunch (yum!) in the village.
This outing will be a good way to begin to get familiar with “winter-hiking” around on snowshoes. Check out the upcoming KHC Full Moon Viewpoint & Astronomy Presentation (Night) Snowshoe event, February 8 (Full Moon) at Stake Lake!
Meet up at the Paul Lake Meet-Up Spot at 8:30am (bring COFFEEEE…lol), carpool to Sun Peaks. Car-poolers, please consult drivers beforehand, as to Car-pooling cost expectations. We will head to the Nordic Centre and pick up any rental gear if needed, then hit the trails! I encourage all participants to bring the 10 essentials (as always) and consider gaiters and poles.
Rentals are available at the Sun Peaks Nordic Centre for $20.00, which includes the trail pass. For those who already own snow-shoes, the trail pass alone is $5.00.
Rentals are also available in Kamloops at Runner’s Sole for $10 -15.00 depending on when you return them. (Same day = $10) They also offer a limited number of poles to go with the snowshoes, if desired. No extra cost for poles. Consider arranging rentals (reserve) ahead of time to avoid last minute problems.
