Description
Mt Assiniboine provincial park is an area of shimmering lakes, glistening glaciers, sky scraping peaks and sun dappled alpine meadows at an elevation of 3,618 metres.  It has a very short summer season so we are going in to catch the early flower season.  We will helicopter in to Mt Assiniboine lodge on Wednesday 25th July and walk the 1.5 Km to the campsite to make our basecamp for 4 nights.  Book your own flights at 403 678 2883 – $175 each way per person.  Helicopter can be booked mid February. Helicopter out to Canmore.  Drive day will be Tuesday 24th to stay at Golden, Lake Louise, or a hotel in Canmore before the flight.  Some of us are in The Rondo in Golden. Naiset Cabins are all full for this period of time.
We are booked into the O’Brien Meadows group campsite where there are tent spots, outhouse, and a good creek to obtain water.  There is no cook shelter so bring a tarp to make a shelter in case of bad weather. It is 1.9 Km from the helipad so the weight of your pack should not be an issue as it is a short hike and there is no rush.  Assiniboine Lodge does not allow non guests to use their shower facility or lodge.
Potential hikes: Â Cautley Traverse – 800 m elevation; 10 Km – a full day.
Windy Point Ridge – 12 Kms return; 500 m elevation
Wonder Pass – 6 km return; 220 m elevation
Nub Ridge and Nublet – 6 km return; 210 m
Sunburst/Cerulean/Lizzie Rummel’s cabin – half day hike
Og lake – 13 Km return; 120 m.
Hikes will be decided on each day depending on weather conditions, and energy levels. Â At this time there could still be some lingering snow patches but the summer flowers should be already showing their pretty faces. Â It will be cool at night so bring good warm sleeping bags. Â And of course it is the mountains – so bring rain gear, snow gear, sunscreen and everything in between.
