Summer 2021 Outdoor Gear – The Message for this coming season: Buy Early!
Outdoor products may be in short supply come summertime this year. Think soon about taking an inventory of what you have, what you will be needing, and if you can, try to buy early, or at least get on a wait-list. For example, supplies of kayaks and bikes may be completely sold out by summer. Some retailers I have spoken to are predicting shortages into next summer as well.
Remember to check the expiry date on your bear spray. If it will expire this year, you may want to get a fresh can before summer. Imagine facing a charging and fairly peeved bear with an out-dated can of bear spray….yikes! They are dated for a reason. Checking availability today, there were none available to buy on amazon.ca. Our local Powderkeg store carries Counter-Assault bear spray (and, as a KHC Vendor, members get a 10% discount!), Surplus Herby’s normally carries bear spray, as does Canadian Tire, and MEC (searching today, shows out of stock online, but some still available in some stores).
Check your dehydrated food supplies, also any parts you may need for gear. Order soon.
Why are we seeing shortages? (Thank you, Covid!) There are actually many, many reasons. I have found a few articles that do a pretty good job of explaining what’s going on and will link them below (the “Atlantic” article was particularly informative). You will see why it’s a good idea to think ahead.
I hope all our club members and local hikers will have the supplies and gear they need to enjoy a great upcoming summer hiking season. See ya on the trails!

My hiking style is a relaxed one - to best take in all the beauty around us.Hunting new wildflowers and fungi will often cause me to be looking everywhere except the trail.
I like to think up unusual/themed hikes (nature is fun), including Art Hikes, Historical Hikes, Wacky Race Events, Santa Stocking Hunts, Halloween Hikes, Photography Hikes, Astronomy/Full Moon Night Hikes, Fossil Hikes, etc.I also seek out interesting things to see and share in nature - gorgeous waterfalls and views, crazy geological formations, scenic forests, and other very special places.
I'm always open to hearing new hike ideas from other hikers.
