March 2024 Newsletter
Greetings all and welcome to a new club year!
Board Updates
- Board Meeting was held on February 19, 2024. The minutes are posted on the website under Club Info/Meeting Minutes page.
- 2024/2025 Membership Registration is currently underway. Membership Renewals started February 1st and new membership started on March 1st. Membership will cap at 200 members or April 30th (whichever comes first). If your friends have shown an interest in the activities you have been doing, please let them know this information.
- Board Membership & Participation – The Board has accepted the resignation of Katherine Roberts as President and Camilla Dahl as Director, Member Liaison and Cheryl Knight as Director-at-Large. The Board is running with a skeleton crew and as a Non-Profit organization, it does require an active Board. Please reflect on your own gifts, talents and time to help fill in the Board positions required which can be found on the Kamloops Hiking Club Info page. The Board typically meets 4 times a year and communicates between meetings using Google Chat.
- Website Update – We are working on creating a new KHC Website as the current website is running into a few technical challenges, glitches & recent outages & slowness on some mobile devices.  We thank Doug Smith, Doug Morris, Frith Powell, Monika Taki for doing the bulk of the work and to the other board members who are testing and offering suggestions. The new website will have a new domain name and is hoping to go live after new membership signup. Please be patient as we do have some hiccups to get through.
- Annual General Meeting – The AGM will be held on Saturday, April 20th – Save the date! Typically, an event will be scheduled to have a hike, AGM meeting and then lunch. This is the opportunity to raise your hand and volunteer for a position. If you cannot make the date and wish to put your name forward, please reach out to a Board Member to let us know your intentions.
Hike Leader Program & Recognition
- Hike leaders planned and organized the following events in February:Â Kenna Hike & Social (Erika & Kevin & the Wanderers x 4), Kenna Hike Sage Trail (Ramblers), Ridge Lakes (Chris & Carla), Beacon Hill (Ramblers), Rose Swanson (John & Carole), Lower Dewdrop/Blue Bird (Sheila), Lac Du Bois (Trekkers) Sovereign Lake (John & Carole), Harper Mountain (Maureen & Bunny), SunPeaks McGillivray Lake (Sam), Dogwood to McConnell Snowshoe (Ramblers), Pyramid Mountain (Matt), Gus Johnson (Ramblers), Batchelor Hills Evening (Sasha & Maureen), Isobel Lake (Trekkers), ), Rose Hill Evening (Maureen & Sasha)
- Thank you to all our volunteer Leaders who continue to plan and lead fantastic events for our club.
- You can see the events that were posted by going to Past Events and 2024 Events Grouped by Month
Events Program
- We had 22 events posted in February which were a combination of hikes, cleat hikes & snowshoes. We ventured out to town several times this month (Rose Swanson, Sovereign Lakes, Sun Peaks, Harper & Pyramid Mountain) and had 2 fabulous evening hikes!
- We have the shoulder season where we can drive to find snow and we are also able to hike….in layers.  With the wild weather changes, remember to review the 10 Essentials for Hiking so you are prepared.
- The Club is run by volunteers and has implemented group leaders to ensure there are events on Tuesday (Wanderers), Wednesday (Ramblers) and Sunday (Trekkers). Â This allows for a consistency of events to be offered and lowering the responsibility of Hike Leaders to feel obligated to hold a weekly event. Â This is also a great way if you are interested in becoming a hike leader to try it out in a group setting, to be mentored by a more experienced Leader. Â
- We are always looking for eager volunteers to step up and become leaders and co-leaders:
- Leaders plan, organize & post events and co-leaders help the leader execute a fun & safe event.
- If you are interested please check out the Hike Leader Program & Resources information and/or contact Monika Taki the KHC Hike Leader Liaison for more information.
