February 2021 KHChronicles
A mid-month KHC digest:
- 2021 KHC renewals are coming in slowly.  We will have a smaller membership this year, but that may be appropriate, given the limited group size that will be allowed once the province opens up.
- New membership registration starts March 1st. A button will be visible on the front page at that time.
- Unrenewed memberships will have their accounts frozen on March 1st and will be unable to login, register for events, comment, etc. until the membership is renewed (or not).  All unrenewed accounts are deleted on April 1st.  Membership processes are scheduled to end by the end of April.
- Our thanks to Frith Powell and Margo Mercier for their work in managing memberships.
- We have revisited the website privacy settings following some software updates.  The list of registrants for an event and contact information for hike leaders is only visible to logged-in members.  Anyone wanting further anonymity can edit their profile on the website to create a nickname.  Hike leaders or admins can still find the real name, if needed.
- At times, some functionalities on the website may change.   That is because updates change every week in the software we use (and all other websites) – WordPress, the theme we use, the programming language (HTML and PHP) and a number of third-party plugins (like Events Manager).   Updates happen for security reasons and for improvements, but with updates, we also encounter bugs too (which get remedied after a while, but cause short-term problems), so the webmaster has to reconfigure settings, disable software, find work-arounds, and sometimes find new apps to replace old ones.  Recently we had a problem where the website would log us out whenever we went to a new
spot.  That was caused by one plugin which we disabled, but that caused other problems.   This type of thing is an ongoing process.
- Our thanks to the Zoom workshop leaders for keeping group activity afloat during the Covid lockdown.
- As winter winds down the spring thaw will start. Â Many trails will be muddy on mild days. Â Â The first trails to dry out with be lower-elevation south-facing trails. Â Â Members can share their trail conditions findings on Facebook.
- One of the benefits of being a KHC member is having access to 250+ pages of trail information, including driving and trailhead directions, maps, GPS tracks, photos, and links to more information.  These are found on the Trails/Locations pages (main menu to get started).  Each page is set up so that most of the information is only available to a logged-in member.  We have started the process of adding track files for hikes too which can be downloaded for use in your mobile app, GPS, or computer.  Tracks can be downloaded from the internet too, but many sites required a paid subscription to do so.  We are providing them as a benefit of membership.  Tracks are ready for download on all the pages linked below.  More will be added as volunteer time permits.

Does membership renewal still require that you have attended a minimum number of events in the preceding year?
That proposed policy was only considered once a number of years ago, but has not been considered since.
