Description

A scramble, wade, swim, and hike in a rugged area

  • A bit of an adventure with some manageable risks – rocks are slippery, there are some deeper pools, some overhanging rock, some more difficult sections (which you can skip) and a steep hike down and back up again
  • You can hike down and hang around by the river, you can traverse the north slot canyon, you can explore the south canyon (more difficult), you can hike over the south end of the south canyon, and you can do some or all of these, but no one will do them alone.
  • Meet at the Aviation way Meetup spot at 9:00 am.   We can convoy or carpool (organize your own) to the trailhead.
  • To hike down and back up to the river you need hiking shoes.    Most hikers bring extra shoes and a change of clothes which can be left at the base on the riverside.
  • To traverse the canyon, hiking boots or trail shoes are best on slippery rocks, but you can use watershoes or anything with traction.   Poles or a staff help.   A dry bag for cameras or phones is recommended, but you can share one with someone else.   If you don’t swim well, bring a PFD.   A towel is good choice to dry off for the hike back.
  • Bring a first-aid kit and anything health/safety oriented that you will need
  • Lunch on the river.
  • We can visit a fossil slope as an added bonus.
  • If it is hot, this will be a more challenging climb back up, but it is short.
  • Some articles on this “hike” – Tranquille Slot Canyons and Slot Canyons on Tranquille River.
  • This is not an easy hike and not really moderate, although some sections will be easier.
  • Co-leaders are requested to keep track of everyone.
  • If you have questions, contact me by email.
