Description

This event is now enabled for registration, but please note:

  • The date chosen will subject to a reasonable weather forecast so check the listing for an update over the last 2-3 days.
  • If the forecast will be unfavorable, the event may be moved a day either way, but we will give registrants sufficient notice
  • If the date has to be moved, you can simply cancel by going to Your Bookings
  • This is a long hike and a long day so everyone must be well-prepared and adequately fit
  • As with all my events, all participants are part of the team, pitching in to co-lead, help with driving, taking care of slower hikers, and being there to help as needed

A long day planned:

  • Meet early to carpool at Aberdeen Mall
  • Drive to Lytton (2 hours), take the reaction ferry across the river then drive to the trailhead
  • Hike the Stein River Trail from the trailhead to Teepee Camp and back (16 – 18  km) – this will take about 4 – 5 hours of steady hiking
  • Lunch at the turn-around at a spot next to the river
  • This is a wildlife corridor so we expect hikers to stay loosely together
  • Drive home (we may share driving duties because of tired hikers) with an estimated return time of 6:00 pm
  • Riders are expected to contribute to the fuel costs/vehicle use – 350 km return – $20-$25 each, depending on the number of people per vehicle  (or drive yourself)
  • The Stein River Trail is relatively moderate though there is a a good climb at the Devil’s Staircase
  • Article on the hike – Stein Valley Trail
  • BC Parks – Stein Valley
  • I have done this route 3x before myself (inc. in April)  so the trip is planned with previous knowledge in mind
  • I will open registration in April and we will keep in touch with the participants; if the weather forecast is not good for that day, we may want to move the hike to a day before or a day after
  • Most people backpack this route, but we can still enjoy the hike on the lower valley in a single day
  • If the hike does not fill. guests will be welcome, but this would be a last week decision.
  • BC Parks does not allow dogs into the park.
  • The reaction ferry closes down with high water in June so May or July are better choices
  • Some highlights along the way will include talking Rock, the Devil’s Staircase, pictographs, and spring growth along the route
  • A wildlife corridor so bear spray is recommended
