Description
This is a lovely hike in the hills above Merritt. It is a moderate trail primarily used for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. Mostly a grassland trail with rolling hills, aspen groves, and some big ponderosa pines. We will no doubt have to hike through some herds of cows at this time of year.
We will start at the campground and hike a little on a gravel road before accessing the hiking trail. The loop takes us around Wounded Knee and Cocobonk trails. I have done some hiking in this area at this time of year and it is always soggy in places so expect to get wet and muddy boots. There could also be tics, and other friendly bugs out there.
The loop is some 15 km long, with a rolling elevation of 405 m. so this is a relatively long day. Bring plenty of water, snacks and food for the several breaks we will take en route. We start at the campground and will follow an All Trails route.
We will meet at the Hillside Drive meet up spot at 0830 to car pool or car convoy to the trailhead. The drive is approx 1 1/4 hrs each way, just past Merritt. If you choose to travel in someone else’s car please bring a change of foot wear as you will probably be wet or muddy at the end of the day. Poles also an asset to aid in jumping muddy puddles!
